Just like our food we put into our bodies, we should pay attention to what we put on our skin. Majority of the time we don't know what ingredients are in our beauty products and how toxic they are to our body. Most of these common ingredients are found in skin care as well as makeup products-slowly breaking down the skin's collagen and causing our skin to age. Here are some of the ingredients to watch out for:
Mineral Oil: a petroleum product similar to plastic, coats the skin and clogs the pores. This process gets in the way of the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other skin problems. This also slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging.
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): this chemical alters and reduces the skin’s natural moisture. This could also cause premature aging and leave you more vulnerable to bacteria.
Propylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene Glycol: this chemical easily penetrates the skin and can weaken protein and cellular structure. The EPA considers PG such a toxic chemical; Because PG penetrates the skin so quickly, it shouldn't be used for skin contact to prevent risks to brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities.
As we age, collagen starts to break down so its essential to only absorb ingredients that help maintains the skin's youthfulness. By having a good skin care routine and using safe skin care products, you are doing right by your skin.
*You also want to make sure that your beauty products are not expired. Expired makeup can start to harbor bacteria causing irritation and bumps that look like acne as well as age the skin when we don't remove to bed (fresh makeup or not)
